Pskov is an undiscovered gem of a small historical city off the beaten tourist paths. It stands in a region of great intrinsic value at the confluence of the borders of Russia, Estonia, and Latvia — the boundaries of powerful former empires. Pskov was founded in by St. Olga, according to legend, at a place that was indicated to her by three beams that had fallen from the sky, beams she subsequently used to build the wooden Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.
The city of Pskov then began to grow around it. From the very beginning of its existence Pskov was an important center of trade and handcrafts that was soon integrated into the Hanseatic League. It belonged to the Republic of Novgorod, later becoming an independent city in and forming the Republic of Pskov with its own parliament, the Veche. In the beginning of the 16 th century it joined the Grand Duchy of Moscow, further stimulating its development, and it was during this time that many of its most beautiful monuments and churches were built.
Pskov was considered the western gate of Russia and its strongly fortified Krom kremlin, or fortress was subject to siege more than times, though it never surrendered. The last tsar abdicated after the Russian revolution in Pskov, and today the city is a true open-air museum where, far from the crowded capitals, you can discover the art and history of Old Russia. We will tour the town along the banks of the Pskov, Mirozha, and Velykaya rivers, along with its different neighbourhoods: Stadishche , Gorodishche , Polonitsche , Zapskovye, and Zavelichye. John the Baptist ; and the Mirozhsky Monastery.
The chief part of the town, with its kremlin on a hill, occupies the right bank of the river, to which the ruins of its old walls built in descend; the Zapskovye stretches along the same bank of the Velikaya below its confluence with the Pskova; and the Zavelichye occupies the left bank of the Velikaya – all three keeping their old historical names.
The cathedral in the kremlin has been four times rebuilt since the 12th century, the present edifice dating from , and contains some very old shrines, as also the graves of the bishops of Pskov and of several Pskov princes, including those of Dovmont d. The church of Dmitriy Solunskiy dates originally from the 12th century; there are others belonging to the 14th and 15th.

Pskov school , school of late medieval Russian icon and mural painting that grew up in the Russian city of Pskov in the late 12th century and reached its highest development, especially in icon painting, in the 14th through the early 16th centuries. Pskov and the larger city of Novgorod both remained free of Mongol rule in the two centuries following the invasions of Russia in the midth century and thus preserved and transformed the Byzantine artistic tradition that was the basis of Russian art.
Pskov evolved a vital and highly accomplished school of its own. The earliest evidence of an independent style at Pskov is the fresco decoration of the Mirozhsk monastery, executed by Greek and local painters in Although painted in a static, formal, archaic manner close in style to Byzantine prototypes , these frescoes show a particularly sombre and intense emotionalism that goes beyond even the typical Russian emphasis on emotional expression.
In the course of the 13th and early 14th centuries, especially after the introduction of the iconostasis —a screen standing before the sanctuary on which a large group of icons could be hung—icon painting assumed predominance over fresco. Pskov perfected an extremely forceful style of icon painting that to the end of its development combined a remarkably skillful expression with a somewhat archaic, even naive, manner of presentation.
At the same time, the Pskov school adopted the conventions of small, elongated, graceful figures and delicate detail that by the 14th century had become characteristic of Russian art, subjecting these outward forms to an intensification of the peculiar local qualities already discernible in the early frescoes. This composition, which was particularly suited to the dark church interiors of this far-northern city, exaggerated the generally contemplative character of Russian icon painting into a sombre, almost oppressive poignancy.
In Moscow, having conquered much of central Russia, annexed Pskov as part of the growing national state; thereafter the Pskov school gradually lost its independent significance. See also Novgorod school ; Moscow school. Pskov school. Info Print Cite. Submit Feedback.

This city located at the confluence of the Velikaya and Pskovo Rivers, was mentioned for the first time in The Tale of Bygone Years – the earliest extant ancient Russian chronicle dating from the beginning of the XII century. For Russia, Pskov was a trade and defensive center – its fortress, consisting of five defensive rings, made the city virtually impregnable. Over the centuries-long history, the city experienced a lot of fights and battles, but was captured only once, and occupied twice during the First and Second World War.
But later, when St. Petersburg sprang up on the map of Russia, Pskov lost its importance and receded into the background in the list of Russian cities. Today, Pskov, the largest stone fortress in Europe, is one of the most important tourist centers in Russia. The five rings, once built to protect the city from enemies, became unique monuments of Russian defense architecture, which attracts travelers from all over the world to come to see it.
